Great police work ends in arrest.

On February 28, 2018 at approximately 10:30PM Transit Police officers assigned to the Department's Crime Suppression Team were conducting fare evasion enforcement at the MBTA's South Station Red Line. Unbeknownst to the officers a male, later identified as Stephen Costigan, 29, of Somerville, had just Assaulted a victim with a knife inside the Commuter Rail bathroom. As Costigan reached the fare gates he entered without paying, he piggybacked in behind a paying customer. Officers approached for the purpose of issuing a citation however Costigan refused to stop and attempted to walk away from the officers. At this time a witness informed the officers of Costigan's knife assault. Costigan and the officers engaged in a struggle and ultimately Costigan was brought under control and placed into custody. Officers recovered the knife used in the alleged assault.


Costigan will face the following charges: Assault by Means of  a Dangerous Weapon, Resisting Arrest, Disorderly Conduct and Fail to ID oneself after Fare Evading.
