 The MBTA would like to encourage all those coming to enjoy and celebrate the 4th of July on the Esplanade with the Boston Pops to use public transportation. The Transit Police will deploy additional officers both uniform and plainclothe to ensure everyone has a safe commute. We would like to remind everyone this is a family friendly event and disorderly/unruly behavior and the consumption of alcohol will not be tolerated. Be respectful of one another while traveling on the MBTA and be particularly mindful of young children, those with disabilities and the elderly. As a reminder ALL fireworks are illegal to use, sell or possess in Massachusetts. It is also illegal to purchase out of state and transport into Massachusetts. TPD officers will strictly enforce MGL Chapter 148 Section 39 on any and all MBTA property and conveyances.

Jury Finds Former Transit Police Officer Shawn McCarthy Guilty of raping two women in 2012.

First and foremost, we must acknowledge the survivors in this horrific incident. We are in total admiration at the courage and bravery they displayed throughout this ordeal. We must also acknowledge Assistant District Attorney Ian Polumbaum whose experience, skills and abilities were brought to bear on behalf of the survivors and citizens of the Commonwealth to hold Shawn McCarthy accountable for his abhorrent, predatory and vile conduct. The jurors rendered a thoughtful and just verdict. 

We are committed to restoring the faith and trust of those we are sworn to serve and protect.

MBTA RIDE

A preliminary investigation conducted by Transit Police detectives suggest the following:

 On September 6, 2023 at approximately 3:30PM an on duty MBTA RIDE operator in the vicinity 2 Elm Street, Woburn, Massachusetts parked the RIDE vehicle. The vehicle had a single adult female passenger/client located within. The operator exited the vehicle and during this time the adult female passenger/client remained seated within the vehicle. TPD detectives believe the operator left the keys in the ignition. At this time a 34 year old male entered the vehicle and drove away. The SP male headed in the direction of Boston. The female passenger, who has intellectual challenges, began calling 911 seeking help/assistance. 

 Massachusetts State Police Troopers notified of the 911 calls as well as the vehicle's general vicinity immediately responded to the area and ultimately observed the RIDE vehicle had crashed into several other vehicles and the tunnel wall. The SP male exited the vehicle and fled in the vicinity of Clinton Street/Surface Road Boston. Multiple TPD and MSP units conducted an area search for the SP where MSP Troopers located the SP in the aforementioned vicinity. He was placed into custody and transported to TPD HQ.

The female passenger sustained non life threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for emergency care.

Approximately 3 additional vehicles sustained damage as a result of the incident.

No other injuries reported at this time.

This incident remains an ongoing and active investigation.

Great Police work by TPD officers leads to arrest of armed assailant.

 On August 9, 2023 at approximately 2PM Transit Police officers on patrol at the MBTA's Ruggles Station were approached by a 67 year old male who informed them of the following: while traveling on a Orange Line train another male, whom he does not know, requested to use his phone. The 67 y/o denied the male's request. This apparently angered the male. His response was to remove a knife from his waistband and threaten the victim with harm. The victim exited the train at the first available stop, Ruggles Station, where he encountered TPD. Witnesses present corroborated the victim's statement. 

After obtaining a description of the assailant several TPD officers coordinated an area area search and located the offending male in front of Roxbury Crossing Station. The male, Maximus Brown 21 of West Roxbury, was positively identified and placed into custody and transported to TPD HQ for the booking process. Brown was also in possession of what we believe to be cocaine. Brown was booked under the charge of Assault by Means of a Dangerous Weapon and Possession of a Controlled Substance.

Cambridge man arrested for Open & Gross Lewdness.

 On March 6, 2023 at approximately 9:30AM a female while travelling on a Red Line train from JFK-UMass to Quincy Center Station reported the following: A male sat directly across from her and committed a lewd act. While doing so the male was staring and laughing at the victim. The victim took the suspect's photograph. TPD was notified and service was held at Quincy Center Station. Responding officers were met by the victim who furnished the officers with the referenced photograph. Based on the photograph officers located the offending male, later identified as Calebre Predelus, 23, of Cambridge, who was seated within the train car. Calebre was removed and placed into custody for Open & Gross Lewdness. 

TPD Detectives allege Calebre is the same suspect male for other similar incidents occurring on the MBTA. TPD Detectives previously sought the public's assistance in the identification of Calebre relative to another similar act. Reference a Transit Police tweet posted on February 17, 2023. 

Calebre was transported to TPD HQ for the arrest booking process.

New Bedford man arrested by TPD for Attempted Unarmed Robbery. MBTA Back Bay Station.

 On March 2, 2023 at approximately 8:25PM Transit Police officers assigned to the Central District were at the MBTA's Back Bay station. While there they heard screams of "Police..Help..Police". Officers immediately proceeded in the direction of the screams and came upon a male/victim who pointed out another male, later identified as Jamaal Rahmeem, 38, of New Bedford. The victim went on to state Rahmeen attempted to forcefully take possession of a suitcase the victim was carrying. The victim and Rahmeen struggled over control of the suitcase and the victim was able to fend off Rahmeen. 

Officers approached Rahmeen and placed him into custody for Attempted Unarmed Robbery. Rahmeen was transported to TPD HQ for the arrest booking process.

 On February 26, 2023 at approximately 6PM two minor females, ages 11 and 12, reported to TPD the following: while on the platform of the North Quincy MBTA station an adult male, also positioned on the platform, yelled out encouraging the girls to come to him. Both girls ignored the male. At this time the adult male began to walk in their direction and stated, "Come here... I have candy and puppies". Both females became frightened and fled the platform area. The male did not pursue nor follow. 

Transit Police detectives are seeking the public's assistance in the identification of the male depicted within. TPD detectives are interested in speaking with this person of interest relative to this investigation. Boston man already wanted for Assaulting a Police officer accosts a teenaged female.

 On February 28, 2023 at approximately 7PM a female teenager while travelling on an MBTA bus in the vicinity of Blue Hill Avenue/Mattapan Sq was approached by an adult male, later identified as Tevon Campbell, 27, of Boston. It was alleged Campbell commented on her appearance, asked where she was headed and wanted to sit next to her. The young lady rebuffed Campbell's advances and he in turn began calling her offensive and derogatory names. The young lady, in an attempt to get away from Campbell, exited the bus at the next stop and Campbell followed her off the bus. The young lady immediately re-entered the bus and notified the bus operator. Campbell did not re-enter but proceeded in the same direction as the bus was travelling: Mattapan Sq. MBTA station which was only a short distance away. The operator notified the Transit Police and multiple officers responded. Campbell was pointed out and the officers approached. him. Officers subsequently discovered there were several warrants in existence for Campbell's arrest issued out of Wrentham District Court for 2 counts of Assault & Battery on a Police Officer, Resisting Arrest and Disorderly Conduct. 

Officers placed Campbell into custody for the warrants and will investigate additional charges of Annoying & Accosting. Campbell was transported to TPD HQ for the arrest booking process.

Boston man arrested by TPD for spraying unknown liquid at fellow passenger.

 On February 27, 2023 at approximately 11:13PM Transit Police officers assigned to the Central District received a radio call to respond to the MBTA's  Fenway D Line Station for a report of a female who was sprayed with an unknown liquid by a male subject. Upon arrival officers observed the victim's hair and jacket was wet with said unknown liquid. The victim went on to inform the officers while standing inside the AFC booth, with a companion on the inbound platform, a male later identified as Tyrell Benton, 36, of Roslindale entered and stated, "Take a bath". Benton then sprayed the victim with an unknown liquid in her face and exited the booth and remained on the platform. The victim pointed out Benton to the responding officers.

Officers approached Benton and subsequently discovered there was a warrant in existence for his arrest issued out of East Boston District Court for Trespassing. Benton was placed into custody for the warrant and will be additionally charged with Assault & Battery. Benton was transported to TPD HQ for the arrest booking process.

The victim denied any injury and declined EMS services.

Identification sought: Civil Rights/Assault & Battery Investigation.

 Transit Police detectives are seeking assistance with the identification of the two individuals depicted within relative to a Civil Rights/Assault & Battery Investigation. The alleged incident occurred on February 20, 2023, at approximately 5:39PM at the MBTA's Davis Sq. Station. The victim, a female of Asian descent, was assaulted and verbally harassed with racial epithets.

Alewife update 02/09/2023

 

On Saturday, February 4, 2023, at approximately 1:30PM, a Transit Police officer was on patrol at the MBTA Alewife Station in Cambridge. The officer had his attention drawn to the fifth (5^th) floor of the parking garage after hearing a loud audible crash. The officer immediately proceeded in that direction. Upon arrival, he observed that a white Honda Civic had crashed through the concrete barrier wall and was partially hanging off the roof on the east side of the garage directly above the main mezzanine of the station.

As the officer approached the vehicle, he observed a 29 year old male, determined to be from Medford, lying on the ground next to the driver’s side open door. The male was conscious but not alert. Shortly thereafter, the driver ceased breathing. The officer immediately began life saving measures with positive results. Upon arrival of EMTs, care of the driver was transferred to them. The injured male was transported to a local hospital for emergency care. There were no other occupants in the vehicle.

Based on statements made by the driver to the responding officer, interviews conducted with the driver’s immediate family member as well as the follow-up investigation conducted by Transit Police detectives, we believe the driver’s actions were intentional and he was seeking to harm himself.

After conferring with the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, we establish the following; Whereas the male driver operated his vehicle in a reckless and negligent manner, we seek the criminal charge of Operating to Endanger in violation of M.G.L., and whereas the male driver’s reckless and negligent actions caused numerous pedestrians/commuters to be struck with significant debris causing injury to one. We seek eight (8) counts of the criminal charge Assault & Battery Dangerous Weapon to Wit: Glass, Steel, Concrete.

Furthermore, the Transit Police Department has filed an Immediate Threat application with the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles to revoke the operator’s license to operate.  

 

This investigation is ongoing.

Boston man arrested for unlicensed possession of a firearm.

 On January 21, 2023 at approximately 4PM Transit Police officers assigned to the North District received a radio call for an unknown male trespassing on the right of way at the MBTA's Wellington Station. Upon arrival the officer encountered the male that was alleged to have trespassed on the right of way, later identified as Joshua Chavez, 21, of Boston. Officers engaged Chavez in conversation and he admitted to being on the right of way. Based on the officer's observations of Chavez during this encounter the officer subsequently recovered a loaded 1911 firearm, hammer cocked with a bullet in the chamber, from Chavez' waistband. Chavez was subsequently booked at TPD HQ for unlicensed possession of a loaded firearm, unlicensed possession of ammunition and possession of a Class A substance-to wit Heroin.

TPD arrest group involved in assault and robberies on MBTA.

 On January 12, 2023 at approximately 5PM Transit Police Operations received a report of a male victim being assaulted by a group, 3 males and 1 female, one of the offenders being armed with a crowbar. This alleged assault occurred at the Harvard Sq. MBTA station however the victim reported it upon arrival at Park Street Station. The offending group continued to travel to Kenmore Station from Park St where they attacked and robbed another victim while on board a Green Line Trolley.  The group allegedly were also threatening several commuters on board the trolley with violence. The marauding group continued to travel to Fenway where they robbed and beat another victim, on the platform, with a crowbar causing facial injuries to the victim. After this assault and robbery the group fled onto the right of way heading in the direction of Brookline.  

Multiple Transit Police units descended upon the area and conducted an exhaustive area search locating three individuals involved in the assaults and robberies. Placed into custody were PARRISH JONES, 25, of Dorchester, WILLIAM WINDHAM, 21, of Brockton and a female juvenile, 16, of Dorchester. All three will face Assault & Battery w/a Dangerous Weapon causing Bodily Injury, Assault & Battery and Armed Robbery charges. All three were transported to TPD HQ for the arrest booking process. 

Investigation is ongoing relative to this matter.

DEVONTE FRANKLIN

On December 31, 2008 at approximately 9:30PM 16 year old Devonte Franklin was stabbed multiple times while riding on an MBTA Route 28 bus in the vicinity of Blue Hill Avenue and Harvard Street in Dorchester. Tragically Devonte did not survive this horrendous and senseless attack. It's an understatement to say Devonte's murder was devastating to his family, friends and all those who knew him.

 Fourteen years have passed since Devonte's murder and the person responsible has yet to be identified. The Transit Police Department will never give up on this case. On this 14th year anniversary mark we implore anyone with information, however slight, relative to Devonte's murder and the identity of his killer to contact us. Devonte deserves your help.

Boston man arrested for numerous charges after incident onboard an MBTA bus.

 On December 27, 2022 at approximately 7:30PM Transit Police officers while at MBTA Nubian Sq. Station were alerted by a concerned citizen that a male, later identified as Carlos Pires, 48 of Boston, had exposed himself to a young female while onboard a Route 15 bus. Officers immediately proceeded in the direction of the bus and located the victim and a witness. Officers were informed of the following: while traveling inbound to Nubian Sq. on a route 15 bus Pires was making inappropriate and aggressive sexual comments to an 18-year-old female and ultimately exposed his genitals to her. When the victim attempted to use her phone to contact her mother relative to what was taking place Pires stated "You trying to call the cops?" and attempted to forcefully grab the phone from the victim's hand. Pires was unsuccessful. 

Based on a description from the victim and witness officers located Pires on Roxbury Street at Shawmut Ave. Pires made disparaging comments about women/victim and stated to the officers "Now arrest me". The officers did in fact arrest Pires and transported him to TPD HQ for the arrest booking process: Annoying & Accosting, Threats to Commit a Crime, Disorderly Conduct and Attempted Unarmed Robbery. 

Transit Police officers have had several encounters with Pires relative to his alleged behavior directed towards women and have sought criminal charges as a result thereof. Those matters are pending.

Larceny Investigation. MBTA JFK/UMass.

 On December 21, 2022, at approximately 1:45PM a 22-year-old Quincy male wanted to display the Holiday spirit when asked by a fellow commuter at the JFK MBTA station if he could borrow his phone to make a quick call. The victim cheerfully handed the suspect male his phone. The victim received his phone back and boarded a Red Line train. At this time the victim received a notification that a Cash app transaction was completed where 100.00 dollars was sent to an unknown person. The suspect who used his phone was no longer on scene. Victim then contacted TPD.

Suspect description: white male, approx. age 30-35, 5'09" with a medium build. 

This incident is being investigated by Transit Police detectives.

Medford man arrested for ABDW at South Station.

 On November 25, 2022 at approximately 6:30AM Transit Police officers assigned to the Central District received a radio call to respond to the MBTA's South Station Commuter Rail Lobby for a report of an assault in progress. Upon arrival officers located a male victim who had sustained a laceration to his face. Witnesses pointed out another male, later identified as Hocine Lounici, 38, of Medford as the assailant. Witnesses alleged they observed a verbal dispute between the two men when suddenly Lounici began to attack the victim with some instrument. Officers immediately controlled Lounici and determined he was responsible for the victim's injuries. Lounici was placed into custody and transported to TPD HQ for the arrest booking process. The victim was transported to a local area hospital for a non life threatening injury to his face.

The facts and circumstances leading to the incident are still under investigation.

Boston man arrested for Indecent Assault & Battery COPLEY STATION.

 On November 23, 2022 at approximately 4:05PM Transit Police officers assigned to the Central District received a radio call to respond to the MBTA's State Street Station for a report of an Indecent Assault & Battery. Upon arrival officers met with a female victim who informed the officers she was Indecently Assaulted by an unknown male a short while ago at Copley MBTA Station and provided a description of the SP. Officers immediately responded to Copley Station and observed a male, later identified as Abdirahman Abdullahi, 24, of Boston matching the description provided by the reporting party. The observant officers also noted Abdullahi matched the depiction of a male involved in a separate Indecent Assault & Battery incident occurring at the MBTA Copley Station on November 18, 2022 at approximately 5:50PM. 

After an on scene investigation conducted by the responding officers they concluded Abdullahi was the male depicted in the photograph of the prior alleged incident (11/18) and placed him into custody. Abdullahi was transported to TPD HQ for the arrest booking process. Abdullahi may face additional counts/charges pending an investigation for separate alleged incidents of Indecent Assault & Battery.

Observant TPD officers nets wanted Dorchester man.

 On November 18, 2022 at approximately 12:50PM Transit Police officers assigned to the Central District observed a male, later identified as Timothy Dodson, 45, of Dorchester walking on Boylston Street near Chinatown MBTA Station. The officers have previously seen Dodson's image relative to several open Armed Robbery investigation's being conducted by TPD Detectives that had occurred on the MBTA system. Officers approached Dodson near the MBTA Chinatown Station to ascertain his identity. Dodson furnished a false name and claimed he did not know his own biographical information. Subsequent to an investigation on scene officer's discovered Dodson's true identity which revealed there were numerous warrants in existence for Dodson's arrest issued out of Brighton District Court for Breaking & Entering Felony 2 counts, Indecent Assault & Battery, Dorchester District Court for Armed Robbery, Assault & Battery with a Dangerous Weapon Serious Bodily Injury, Assault with a Dangerous Weapon 3 counts, Possession of a Class B Substance, West Roxbury District Court for Larceny, Chelsea District Court for Driving w/ a Suspended License and Suffolk Superior Court for Armed Robbery. Dodson was placed into custody and transported to TPD HQ for the arrest booking process.

East Boston man arrested for Armed Robbery -Gun.

 On November 15, 2022 at approximately 5:20PM a 24 year old male victim was walking just outside the East Boston Memorial Stadium when he was approached and stopped by 3 males. One of the males later identified as Ja'Kye Lucas, 18, of East Boston allegedly placed a firearm into the victim's stomach and demanded "everything" the victim had. The victim proceeded to hand over his iPhone and wallet containing cash and credit cards. Upon completion of the robbery the suspects fled into the MBTA's Airport Station. 

The victim gave chase and observed a black firearm fall the waistband area of Lucas near the station's elevator. Lucas and the victim struggled on the outbound platform and Lucas was able to flee again exiting towards the station's parking lot. Once in the parking lot the victim and an MBTA employee detained Lucas until arrival of the TPD. TPD officers were able to locate the firearm used, a Smith & Wesson Bodyguard 380 Auto with 5 rounds in the magazine and 1 in the chamber. The firearm was recovered in the mezzanine area by the elevator. Lucas was positively identified, placed into custody for Armed Robbery, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and Unlawful Possession of Ammunition and transported to TPD HQ for the arrest booking process. (The two other suspects were able to make good their escape.)
