Providence man arrested for attacking elder at South Station.

On April 30, 2021 at approximately 5:51PM Transit Police officers received a radio call to respond to the MBTA's South Station commuter rail track 7 for an unknown disturbance. Upon arrival officers observed a male, later identified as Nestor Herrera, 37, of Providence screaming at another male/victim (60 years of age or older). Officers attempted to calm Herrera to no avail. Herrera was accusing the victim of stealing his cell phone. Herrera was using profanities and creating a disturbance. Another concerned citizen came forward and informed the officers she observed Herrera strike the victim 3 times in the face with a closed fist after accusing him of stealing his phone. Officers were able to locate Herrera's phone, which was turned into Keolis Lost & Found prior. The victim had nothing to do with Herrera's phone being lost.

Based on the Victim's age and Herrera's tumultuous behavior Herrera was placed into custody for Assault & Battery on a Person 60 years of age or older. As the officers were taking Herrera into custody they discovered a clear bag containing a white powdery substance from Herrera's person. Upon the discovery Herrera stated "Yup, that's cocaine for my personal use". Herrera was also charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance pending laboratory results. Herrera was transported to TPD HQ for the arest booking process.
