On October 31st, 2012 at approximately 6:40PM Transit Police officers assigned to Area 1 were at Copley Sq. MBTA station conducting fare evasion enforcement. While there they had occasion to observe a male, later identified as Derek Ramsey, 26 of South Boston, MA., "piggyback" in behind a paying customer and enter into the paid area of the station. Officers approached Ramsey for purposes of issuing him a citation, during the course of obtaining his information officers discovered there was an outstanding default warrant for Ramsey's arrest. The warrant issued by Chelsea District Court was for Operating to Endanger and Leaving the Scene of an Accident w/property Damage. Ramsey was placed into custody and transported to Transit Police HQ for processing.

thus far this year Transit Police officers have issued 4,135 fare evasion citations, compared to this time last year there were 2,554 fare evasion citations issued. The Transit Police will continue to enforce fare evasion throughout the system by utilizing both plainclothe and uniform officers. Superintendent-in-Chief Joseph O'Connor stated, " oftentimes individuals who are stopped for fare evasion are wanted for other crimes. By utilizing our Point of Entry policing strategy, we believe stopping individuals for fare evasion will result in a safer system for all our riders ".
