Officer Donohue statement regarding Rolling Stone cover

MBTA Transit Police Officer Richard "Dic" Donohue and his family have received several requests from the media relative to his thoughts and feelings regarding the upcoming cover of Rolling Stone magazine. Below is a statement from Officer Donohue.
MBTA Transit Officer Donohue
"The City of Boston and the surrounding communities have faced many challenges since the bombings at the marathon finish line.  The new cover of Rolling Stone has garnered much attention due to its sensationalized depiction of one of the alleged bombers.  My family and I were personally affected by these individuals’ actions.  I cannot and do not condone the cover of the magazine, which is thoughtless at best.  However, I appreciate our country’s protection of free speech afforded to us by the Constitution.  I am confident that our Boston Strong community will remain intrepid and unshaken by the cover of this magazine."

  1. Kudos Officer Donohue! Great way to rise above, as you've shown time and again since that day. Here was my response to RS:

    To Whom it May Concern,

I understand that the first amendment gives you the right to publish whatever you want within reason. I also understand that you want to be an edgy publication, that pushes back against the typical conventions of society. That's fine, however it is my feeling that your choice to put the terror suspect on your latest cover was an excercise in poor taste. Imagine if you were one of the many victims from that terrible day. How would you feel if in every store you entered, you were confronted with this person's face? How would you feel seeing that, if you were the mother of that 8 year old boy who was killed? But it's not bad enough that his face is there, staring out from the shelf, but it's a photo that is done in your typical "rock star" format, seemingly looking so innocent. I understand the point of the article (at least as far as I can guess from reading the subtitle on the cover), and while I don't agree with it's premise, I believe it is an article that would have some interest in the broader community, but to try to boost sales by immortalizing that monster on the cover is a slap in the face to the many dead, injured and traumatized citizens of Massachusetts. Since the photo clearly made it through whatever vetting process you have, I can only conclude that your entire organization is morally bankrupt, and I vow to never again purchase your magazine or othewise support your company. I hope that there are sufficient repercussions throughout the country so that you recognize your error in judgement, such that CVS' boycott is only the beginning, because I'm sure that the only way you will recognize the repugnant nature of this choice is if it effects your bottom line.

  2. Talk about desperate for news, what is wrong with Rolling stone magazine to put such a coward on its cover after all he did to our city and state , Officer Donohue's thoughts about the photo of this low life are right on , as they should be , i can't imagine him and his familys shock when he realized this evil human being was plastered all over the country seeing this magazine is on most newstands/bookstores, Officer Donohue and your family i'm truly sorry you were re-traumatized all over again, i know all about PTSD, God bless you sir.I wish you well.

  3. Dic continues to demonstrate that he is a class act. His department, family, and all of Boston must be very proud of him.

  4. We also have a family member who was murdered by a nothing freak like Tsarnaev. If these creeps weren't low enough on the evolution scale, the staff at Rolling Stone has proven themselves to be equally as despicable, not to mention uncreative babies without standards of any kind. Yikes, how low do you need to stoop for a buck? What's next? An airbrushed sensationalized version of Hitler playing guitar with Bin Laden? Way to go. You have fed right into the hands of narcissistic losers. They want nothing more than to be notorious and have no other way to achieve their goals other than to murder and maim. You give them all what they want. I hope you grow up some day and understand this. And when you do, I hope you don't have to pay the price some of us have paid for indiscretions like yours.
