On August 3, 2018 at approximately 9:21PM Transit Police officers were conducting a High Visibility check of MBTA Ashmont station. While located near the north entrance the officers observed a vehicle, traveling at a high rate of speed, strike a pedestrian as he was crossing the street in the vicinity of 1913 Dorchester Avenue. After striking the pedestrian the vehicle fled the scene. Two TPD motorcycle officers who witnessed the incident got on their MC's and conducted an area search for the vehicle. A 3rd Transit Police officer rendered aid to the victim until relieved by a off duty physician. The TPD motorcycle officers were able to locate and follow the suspect vehicle as the driver continued to evade apprehension. Ultimately the driver/suspect crashed into three additional parked vehicles at the corner of Adams and Beaumont and attempted to flee on foot. While doing so he discarded a loaded firearm. The officers were able to apprehend the suspect and place him into custody and recover the firearm. The suspect is a 31 year old male with a Dorchester address. It is expected he will be arraigned on Monday in Dorchester District Court for Fleeing the scene of an accident w/personal injury, driving while intoxicated and illegal possession of a firearm.
Superintendent Sullivan stated " Our officers on their police motorcycles, despite great danger to their personal safety, followed and ultimately apprehended an armed suspect. Their courageous efforts are a credit to law enforcement officers everywhere and we are proud of them and grateful they were not seriously injured".
The victim of the hit and run is expected to survive.
