Each year graffiti and other forms of vandalism committed on MBTA property costs an estimated 1 million dollars to remove and/or fix. To fight back against these criminal and costly acts the Transit Police dedicate resources for identifying, prosecuting and in some instances obtaining court ordered restitution from individuals responsible for such behavior against the MBTA. Lieutenant Detective Nancy O'Loughlin, a 30 year veteran of the Transit Police Department, is recognized throughout the United States as an expert in conducting graffiti investigations and for her ability to interpret the "tagging" signs left behind by vandals.  LT.Det. O'Loughlin has been identifying and bringing those responsible for defacing MBTA property into the criminal justice system since 1984. She has recouped thousands of dollars in restitution for the MBTA over the years. ( read story here )

Most recently LT.Det. O'Loughlin has identified an individual who has been defacing not only MBTA property but properties located within Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, Newton and Somerville for the past two years. On November 9th, 2012 investigators lead by LT.Det. O'Loughlin executed a search warrant on a residence located in Somerville. As a result, criminal charges will be sought against Spencer Wright, 21 of Somerville, MA., for multiple counts of felony Defacing Property and multiple counts felony Vandalism. Wright will have to appear in the following courts, Boston Municipal Court, Brookline, Cambridge, Newton and Somerville in the near future.


Superintendent -in-Chief Joseph O'Connor commended the work of LT. O'Loughlin, " the identification and subsequent charges in this case are another example of the great police work that she has done over the last 30 years to identify individuals who vandalize property throughout the Commonwealth and the nation ". 

LT. Det. O'Loughlin recently announced that she would be retiring. LT.Det. O'Loughlin began her career in 1983 and held various positions within the department. LT Det. O'Loughlin is highly respected in the law enforcement community for her unique ability to identify and successfully assist in the prosecution of graffiti vandals throughout the world. LT.Det O'Loughlin received numerous commendations throughout her career. In 2000 LT.Det. O'Loughlin saved the life of a victim who had been stabbed at the Downtown Crossing MBTA station.  For her heroic actions she was presented with the Medal of Valor by Governor Paul Cellucci at the annual Trooper George L. Hanna  Memorial Awards Ceremony.

TPD investigating Indecent Assault & Battery

On Tuesday November 27th, 2012 a female reported at approximately 12:30PM she was indecently assaulted while entering the MBTA JFK/UMASS station, located in Dorchester. The assault is reported to have occurred in the parking area, adjacent to Sydney Street, while walking towards the station entrance.

  The suspect is described as follows: White male, mid 20's, 5'10" in height, heavy build, clear complexion, scruffy brown beard, wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt (NO LOGO), light blue jeans and sneakers.

Transit Police detectives are actively investigating the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident. Witnesses or anyone with information are encouraged to contact the Criminal Investigation Unit at 617-222-1050. TPD Activity Nov.25th

On November 25th, 2012 at approximately 10:15am Transit Police officers assigned to Area 1 were on patrol at MBTA's Chinatown station, outbound platform, when their attention was drawn to two males, later identified as Jose Correano, 30 of Boston,MA. and Luis Quiles, 41 also of Boston,MA. Correano and Quiles were huddled together in what appeared to be an attempt to hide something from passersby. The officers walked in their direction and observed both males holding several wrist watches with the "price tags" still affixed. Upon noticing the officers Correano and Quiles attempted to stuff the watches into their pockets and began to walk away from the officers. The officers caught up to both subjects and engaged them in conversation. It was determined the watches, 13 in total, had recently been stolen from Macy's department store located a short distance away. Quiles confirmed he was just inside Macy's and ultimately admitted to stealing the mechandise. Both Quiles and Correano were placed into custody for Receiving Stolen property and transported to Transit Police HQ for the booking process. The watches were confiscated as evidence and an employee from Macy's loss prevention team confirmed, via the SKU number, the watches were from Macy's. Both subjects will appear in Boston Municipal Court sometime today.

On November 25th, 2012 at approximately 3:30pm Transit Police officers assigned to Area 2 received a radio call to respond to MBTA Lechmere station for a report of a male party who was running in front of the oncoming trolley's. Upon arrival officers spoke with an MBTA employee who witnessed and pointed to the male, later identified as Alzy Bello, 27 of Boston,MA. ,  who was "darting" in front of the trolleys. Officers approached Bello to ascertain what his reasoning was and to explain the dangers associated with crossing over the tracks in the presence of oncoming trolleys. Bello replied by stating he had a "right to remain silent". He certainly did, turns out Bello had an outstanding warrant for his arrest issued from Brookline District Court for motor vehicle violations. Bello was placed into custody for the warrant and transported to Transit Police HQ for the booking process. Bello will appear in Brookline D.C.

Man bites cab driver @Wonderland Station

On November 20th, 2012 at approximately 1:30am Transit Police officers along with Revere Police officers received a radio call to respond to Wonderland MBTA station busway for a report of an affray in progress. Upon arrival officers observed multiple individuals, some sporting injuries, who appeared to have been engaged in conflict. Officers calmed the situation and separated subjects involved. Witnesses and victims present informed the officers of the following: two males, later identified as Ivan Hernandez, 22 of Dorchester, MA. and Jevaun Jacques, 21 of Mattapan, MA. approached an MBTA employee claiming to be T employees and demanded a ride. The MBTA employee refused, in response Hernandez and Jacques kicked the real MBTA employee's vehicle. Hernandez and Jacques then approached a cab driver parked within the cab stand at Wonderland station and requested to be driven to Blue Hill Avenue for "twenty dollars". The cab driver refused and explained the fare to Blue Hill Avenue would be 50 dollars. At this time Jacques began to punch the cab driver about the head and face with a closed fist through the open window causing a laceration to the victim's forehead.

A fellow cab driver witnessing the brutal attack came to the victim's aid and attempted to pull Jacques away from him. As he was attempting to pull Jacques away from the victim/fellow cab driver Hernandez set upon him punching him in the head, it was at this time Jacques bit him on the hand puncturing the skin. Jacques and Hernandez then threw the 2nd victim to the ground and proceeded to punch and kick him. Several other cab drivers witnessing the assault came to his aid and were able to cease the assault until police arrived. Jacques was placed under arrest for the following charges, Assault&Battery on a person over 60, A&B w/Dangerous Weapon-shod foot, Aggravated A&B w/injuries and A&B. Hernandez was placed under arrest for the following charges, A&B on a person over 60, A&B w/Dangerous Weapon-shod foot and A&B.

While placing Jacques into the arrest transport vehicle he kicked a Transit Police officer, striking him in the hip area. Jacques will be additionally charged with A&B on a Police Officer. Jacques and Hernandez were transported to Transit Police HQ for the booking process and will appear in Chelsea DC sometime today.

Woman arrested for Cruelty to Animal

On November 15th, 2012 at approximately 7:45 am Transit Police officers assigned to Area 1 were on patrol at MBTA's South Station Commuter Rail lobby when they were approached by a concerned citizen who informed them a woman was badly abusing a small dog (believed to be a Yorkshire terrier) inside the women's restroom. The citizen stated the suspect, later identified as Ana Prado, 26 of Henderson, Nevada, suspended the dog in the air by its leash, essentially hanging the dog. Additionally, officers were notified,  Prado punched the dog at least three times and also kicked the dog. A second witness coroborated the original witness statement. A female Transit Police officer entered the Women's restroom and escorted Prado outside where she was placed under arrest for Cruelty to Animals. Prado stated to the officers at the time of her arrest she was in Boston to attend Suffolk Superior Court for a charge of drug trafficking. Prado was transported to Transit Police HQ for booking and appeared in Boston Municipal Court the same day.

The dog, named "Dolce", was turned over to the City of Boston's Animal Control Division and was evaluated by a veterinarian for any injuries.
