Transit Police MOP Unit officers struck by MV

Accident Investigation
On September 5, 2014 at approximately 10:40am three members of the Transit Police MOP Unit (Mobile Operations Patrol) were traveling in the left hand lane, northbound, on Bennington Street near the MBTA's Orient Heights station. Suddenly, two of the officers were struck by a motor vehicle, being operated by a 69 year old female from Winthrop, dislodging both officers from their motorcycles. Both officers were transported to local area hospitals for emergency treatment. One of the officers sustained a broken leg which will require surgery. The other officer sustained NON life threatening injuries and remained hospitalized for observations.

A preliminary investigation suggest the operator of the motor vehicle was traveling northbound on Bennington Street and attempted to make a U-turn from the right hand lane when she struck the Transit Police officers.  The investigation is ongoing.

Transit Police officers proudly and diligently provide professional police service on a daily basis, this is a stark reminder on how dangerous that service can be. We are confident our brother officers in this incident will have a complete and speedy recovery and we are grateful for the well wishes the Transit Police Department have received.
